Battery Q&A
A lithium solid-state battery uses solid electrodes and a solid electrolyte, instead of the liquid or polymer gel electrolytes found in lithium-ion or lithium polymer batteries.
What users most worry about a lithium-ion battery is safety. The current Li-ion battery has a risk of battery damage such as swelling caused by temperature change or leakage caused by external force since it uses liquid electrolyte solution. Therefore, we need devices or components that can improve safety. However, a solid-state battery with solid electrolyte shows improved stability with a solid structure, and increased safety since it maintains the form even if the electrolyte is damaged.
Then, why do we need a solid-state battery? It is to increase capacity of UAV drone batteries.
A solid-state battery has higher energy density than a Li-ion battery that uses liquid electrolyte solution. It doesn’t have a risk of explosion or fire, so there is no need to have components for safety, thus saving more space. Then we have more space to put more active materials which increase battery capacity in the battery.
A solid-state battery can increase energy density per unit area since only a small number of batteries are needed. For that reason, a solid-state battery is perfect to make an UAV drone battery system of module and pack, which needs high capacity.
If a lithium battery is not going to be used for at least 3 months, the battery should be charged/discharged to 40% prior to storage. Due to natural discharge even while not in use, stored batteries must be recharged every 4 months back to 40% to avoid permanent damage or disabling of the battery. Systems that are in storage should never remain connected to a power source, and care should be taken to maintain the temperature within the storage temperature indicated in the User Guide.
All lithium-polymer batteries exhibit a small amount of swelling during charge and discharge cycles. Swelling which leads to noticeable bulging of the battery pack or your system is abnormal. Abnormal swelling can occur for a number of reasons including exposure to high temperature, extended time at full charge, extended cycling, over-discharge while in storage, or damage due to being dropped or deformed.
In most cases, a swollen battery which has resulted in mechanical damage to your system does not present a safety risk, as the swelling is primarily from harmless carbon dioxide (CO2) gas generation. However, in some rare instances, excessive swelling may lead to hazardous conditions. Therefore, AllrunBattery recommends treating all excessively swollen batteries carefully to avoid puncture or further damage. You should promptly replace the battery.
